Hi there, I’m Kayla Heeter!

I am PASSIONATE about birth, and everything surrounding it!

In the months following my daughter’s arrival, I became more and more fascinated with birth stories having actually gone through it myself. I began to see that there was more than one way to give birth, and started wondering why other women were choosing to give birth naturally and outside of the hospital. After our daughter turned a year old, God lit a FIRE in me for the birth world and I decided to become a birth doula and eventually childbirth educator.

My full Story

I was born in West Virginia and moved to Columbus, Ohio when I was eight years old. I was raised there and met my future husband when I was 15. We fell in love as teenagers and are more in love now than we ever have been!

Technically, I was raised a catholic, but my immediate family was anything but devout. I began exploring faith more in high school and college, but it was in my final semester of college where I truly realized what it meant to have a relationship with Jesus, and to follow Him for all of my days. It’s been a wild ride ever since!

My husband and I dated through all of high school.  When I moved down to Greensboro, NC for college, we still maintained our relationship long-distance. Our love for each other only grew stronger and we were married a month after I graduated in June of 2011. We decided to stay in Greensboro after we got married because he had been offered a job on the worship staff at our church. We had planned (or at least I had) to wait to have children until ten years down the road once we were well into our careers (I was a public school teacher at the time,) but God had other plans.

A couple of years into our marriage, the Lord began pulling on our hearts and speaking to us that it was time to start a family. Soon after this came our first child and our only daughter, Brinkley. Leading up to her birth I was still petrified of IV’s, shots, and blood, hated the hospital, but pain wise was ready for my epidural before contractions had even begun. I knew very little about the process and didn’t educate myself beyond reading What to Expect When You’re Expecting (not what I would recommend anymore), and went in to have my standard American birth. All went fine and I didn’t experience any trauma, however, in the months following her birth, I became more and more fascinated with birth stories now that I had been through it myself. I began to see that there was more than one way to give birth, and started wondering why other women were choosing to give birth naturally and outside of the hospital.

After our daughter turned a year old, God lit a FIRE in me for the birth world and I started the process of becoming a certified birth doula. The length of that process can vary, but I was able to complete my certification within six months because of the time I was able to dedicate to it. I soon began supporting families and attending births and my love for this amazing gift of life only grew!

A couple of years later, I became certified to teach childbirth education as well, and realized how perfect it was for me because it combined my original career path (education–I LOVE to teach) and my biggest passion (birth!) It was a match made in heaven for me!

I took a few years off to have three more children (who are all boys, and were all born naturally at a birth center and at home) and ended up having the privilege of working alongside my husband at our church for four years. It was a wonderful season of my life, but as it was coming to an end, the Lord was pointing me back to birth and I didn’t even quite realize how ready I was to jump in again feet first!

This is how Surrendered Birth Services was born. In all of my pregnancies and births, the lesson God has had to teach me again and again is the act of surrender. We can plan and plot all we want, and we can learn (and should!) and know all we can, but ultimately, we have to surrender our desires to His will in order to experience the supernatural peace that comes from resting fully in Him.

At Surrendered Birth Services, I want my clients to be fully educated about everything surrounding birth so that they can make the wisest and most informed decisions for themselves and their children; weighing the risks and benefits of each decision, asking the Holy Spirit for His guidance, and then choosing whatever He leads them to. Ultimately, I want them to learn to surrender their births to Him, because His ways are above our ways, His thoughts are above our thoughts, He always has our best interest at heart, and He always works all things together for our good.

I pray for all of my clients and their families regularly as we take this life-changing journey together! It would be an honor to have the privilege of helping you enter into motherhood whether you are having your first baby, or you have done this many times before.

In October of 2023 we welcomed another baby boy, amidst running this business and launching a podcast, and are thrilled to now be a family of seven. We are excited to see what else God has planned for our family and business!
